WOOLCOOL

Designing and creating an outerwear garment following a live brief for the brand Woolcool.

Summary

Woolcool is a pioneer of sustainable packaging, using wool to create a clean and natural insulation for packaging. Presented with a brief to expand the use of their product into the textiles industry, in the form of an outerwear garment, I designed and created a reversible, detachable, and unisex coat.

To begin this project research was completed into various types of outerwear that can be worn in various ways, along with styles that would suit any gender. Sustainable, natural materials were researched alongside this, as they were an essential to stay aligned with the brands ethos. To stay in keeping, I looked into natural materials and dyes that would have the least environmental impact. As a result of this research, a hemp, cotton combination fabric was selected to make the garment. The fabric would remain undyed for one side of the coat, and on the reverse there would be an orange dye to create two different styles of coats making the garment more wearable. The design incorporated the wool in the collar and pockets encased in a sheer fabric so that the colour and texture of the wool was shown through as a design detail.

The overall style of the coat was multifunctional, allowing the wearer to customise it in multiple ways; cropped neutral, cropped orange, long neutral, and long orange. The fit of the coat also meant that it would suit various genders and sizes, as demonstrated in the images above. Construction aimed to minimise waste by using as much as the fabric as possible, which was considered when patterning.
